Salalah, Oman

The only place in the world where you can catch two different species of permit in a single day.

Arabian Fly specialise in professionally guided, tailor made saltwater fishing trips in Southern Oman. Pioneering the 4th species of permit on fly, the T.Africanus. Whether you are walking the beaches, drifting the rocky outcrops, exploring secluded bays or teasing large gamefish along the drop off, Oman has a multitude of species to target.

The Fishing

Oman’s diverse waters give us the unique opportunity to offer a wide variety of fishing.  Inshore and offshore boat based as well as beach fishing is all available in one location. There are no long journeys each day as the drop off and inshore fishing is just a few minutes from the dock, allowing you to maximize your time on the water.

In the morning you can target large schools of tailing Africanus (the only place in the world to target them on fly),  Milkfish, Queenfish, Bluefish, Pompano and multiple Trevally species whilst drifting along the vast cliff faces or exploring the shallow beaches and secluded bays. Then spend the afternoon relaxing while you troll for billfish and Dorado along the drop off, or get the blood pumping sight casting to Dorado that cruise on the surface and hang around fads and flotsom.

Our land based fishing is not for the faint hearted and often require you to hike into remote beaches. Once there be prepared to run up and down the beach chasing the elusive Indo-Pacific Permit as they tail in the shallows or casting to largespot pompano and Bluefish.

At certain times of the season you might encounter the odd GT cruising the shoreline in search of mullet or sardines.

The Gear

You’ll need three rods to fish Salalah effectively. A 9′ 8-weight with a floating WF-line for indo-pacific permit along the beaches, 9′ 10-weight with a WF floating line with an intermediate og sinking clear tip (Like the Sonar Titan Tropical Clear Tip from Scientific Anglers for africanus permit, and a 12-weight for all the big stuff; like GT, sailfish, queenfish etc. The guides provide just the right flies for the Africanus permit, but bring along what you have of crab and shrimp patterns – and don’t forget some brushflies and clousers.

The Oman Experience

Oman’s coastline is formed up of sprawling sandy beaches, secluded rocky bays and sheer jagged cliffs that plunge dramatically into the ocean. With the Gulf of Oman in the north and the Arabian Sea in the south (a region of the north Indian ocean) Oman’s landscape is truly diverse.

After extensive exploration of the entire coastline we founded Arabian Fly Sport Fishing to cater for the international fishing market. We offer the chance to fish this beautiful and remote destination in first class comfort with experienced fishing guides.

The Sultanate of Oman is situated on the south eastern side of the Arabian peninsula. In the 19th Century it was a powerful empire, extending across to Iran and Pakistan and all the way south to Zanzibar, competing with Portugal and Britain for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. In the 20th century the Sultanate came under the influence of the United Kingdom. Historically, Muscat (modern day capital of Oman) was the principal trading port of the Persian Gulf region and was also among the most important trading ports in the Indian Ocean.

Relatively hard to access, until the 1970s when Sultan Qaboos Bin Said came in to power, he brought economic reform and modernisation to the country opening it up to the rest of the world.

Oman’s economy is reliant on its oil resources and petroleum products which have helped to rapidly develop the country. Both agriculture and fishing are important sources of incomes, and more recently a fast growing tourism sector. Oman’s attractions include a largely untouched coastline, rugged mountain ranges, beautiful riverbeds or Wadi’s as they are referred to and vast sand dune filled deserts.  There are also many towns steeped in rich history, with their forts, palaces and walled cities. It is truly a mystical and untouched destination with the most welcoming local people you could ever wish to meet.
